GENERAL

Mountaineer Caravan

The Mountaineer Athletic Club will hold the WVU Coaches Caravan 5: 30-7: 30 pm at The Purple Iris at Hartwood Mansion.

Basketball coach Bob Huggis and football coach Neal Brown will attend, as will some other coaches and administrators.

Individual Tickets are $ 50.

A table sponsorship is $ 750 for 10 guests.

WVU bus trips

The Mountaineer Fan Club of the Eastern Panhandle has scheduled two bus trips to football games:

They are for Pitt Sept. 1 and Virginia Tech Sept. 22.

Cost is $ 55 per person for transportation only; folks must get their own game tickets.

The bus will leave Martinsburg (Pill & Pill Law Office) six hours prior to kickoff

for the Pitt game and seven hours prior for the Virgia Tech game.

The bus will return to Martinsburg immediately after the games, both of which are Thursday nights.

To secure a spot, please pay at Pill & Pill (85 Aikens Center, Martinsburg).

Summer camps

Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is now accepting registration for these coming camps for children ages 3-12. As with all of our activities, pre-registration is required. You may register online or download any of the forms at www.mbcparks-rec.org

TinyTots Soccer Camp – $ 40 / child- a four-day camp for children aged 3 (as of June 6) and their parents. From 5: 30-6: 30 pm June 6-9.

TinyTots Sports Camp – $ 40 / child – a four-day camp for children ages 3 & 4 (as of June 20). Parent participation required. From 5: 30-6: 30 pm June 22-23.

Mighty Mites Soccer Camp – $ 55 / child – a four-day camp for children ages 4 & 5 (as of July 1). Shin guards and soccer shoes are required. From 6-7: 15 pm July 5-8.

Mighty Mites Basketball Camp – $ 55 / child – a four-day camp for children ages 5-7 (as of June 1). From 6-7: 15 pm June 13-16.

Youth Flag Football Camp – $ 40 / child – a three-day camp for children ages 7-10 as of the first day of camp. From 5: 45-7: 15 pm June 26-28.

Berkeley Summer Adventure Day Camps:

Camps will begin on June 13 and run weekly through Aug. 8. Choose either the Berkeley 2000 Rec Center or the W. Randy Smith Rec Center.

Open to ages 6-12 (children must be 6 as of 09/01/2021 and no older than 12 as of the 1st day of camp)

Themed weekly camps

$ 175 per child / per week ($ 10 multi-child OR multi-week discounts available-cannot be combined)

Camp hours: 9 am-5pm (before and after care available at an extra fee)

Camp locations: Berkeley 2000 Rec Center & W. Randy Smith Recreation Center (register for one location)

Fun activities, games and local trips to keep kids entertained this summer.

Swim classes

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is now registering for its summer 2022 swim lessons online or in person.

The following classes will be offered:

Preschool Classes (Ages 3-5) to include 3s with parents and 3s alone. $ 35 per one-week session

Youth Classes (Ages 6 and up) with Levels 1-3, 4 Beginners and 4 Advanced, and Level 5. Prices range from $ 60- $ 70 per two-week session, depending on the length of the class time.

These classes run Monday – Friday. Morning or evening session are available.

WVSSAC coaching classes

West Virginia Coaching classes are scheduled to take place in May and June in the library at Spring Mills High School.

One session takes place from 8 am to 4 pm on May 14 and from 9 am to 3:30 pm May 15.

The second session takes place from 8 am to 4 pm on June 11 and 9 am to 3:30 pm on June 12.

Lifeguard training

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is accepting registration for a lifeguard training course for ages 15 and above.

There are 15 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. This course is not available for online registration and must be done in-person at the administrative office.

Instruction will take place from 5-9 pm May 19 and 20 and from 8 am to 5 pm May 22 and 23 at the War Memorial Park Pool.

Attendance at all class days is mandatory as part of the certification.

The fee is $ 200 per person (includes instruction, manual and CPR mask); certification is valid for two years and covers CPR / AED / first aid in the course.

Pre-registration is required, and payment is due at the time of registration. A valid driver’s permit / license or birth certificate for proof of age is required at the time of registration.

Taking this course does not automatically secure employment at a M-BC Parks & Recreation pools, but the department encourages all passing participants to apply to join the summer lifeguard team.

Beginner Yoga Workshop

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is accepting applications for beginner yoga.

This course is specifically designed for individuals who have never taken a yoga class. Modifications will be given to accommodate all. The instructor will strive to make all individuals feel safe and comfortable. Students do not need to be able to touch their toes, but they must be willing to try.

This is a six-week introductory course. This class takes place from 7-8: 30 pm on Thursdays, April 28-June 2.

Cost is $ 90.

BASKETBALL

Spring tournaments

A series of basketball tournaments are scheduled at the W. Randy Smith Center in Inwood.

They are for grades 3 to 12 for boys and girls.

Here are the dates: May 7; and May 14 and 15.

Cost is $ 255 per team, and each team is guaranteed three games.

GOLF

Lowe Memorial

The 31st annual Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department / John D, Lowe Jr. Memorial Golf Classic will take place May 13 at Cress Creek Golf and Country Club.

EPAC-DST tournament

The Eastern Panhandle Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is hosting its EPAC-DST golf tournament 9 am May 27 at Locust Hill in Charles Town.

The event is to raise money for the chapter’s scholarships, youth / mentoring programming, and public service activities.

Event registration includes breakfast snack, lunch, golf cart, green fees and range fees, gift bag and a chance at a door prize.

Registration and breakfast begin at 9am, with a shotgun start at 10:30 am, then your foursome can share in the prizes and fun.

The early bird fee is $ 90 per player or $ 340 per foursome through April 30. Registration closes May 25.

Any golfer who does not have a foursome will be matched with others to complete a team.

There are also sponsorship opportunities available for individuals and businesses.

Hutzler Classic

The 35th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic will take place June 6 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. The event is back in full pre-pandemic form, featuring both morning and afternoon flights to accommodate up to 200 golfers.

The morning call to carts time is 7 am and afternoon is 12:45 pm Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of each flight, and flight preference will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Golfers can form their own teams but will be subject to handicap restrictions as determined by the golf pro at Cress Creek.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to benefit WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson. Since the golf classic was established in 1988, more than $ 2.2 million has been raised to fund equipment and programs at both hospitals.

SOFTBALL

Martinsburg Fastpitch

Martinsburg Fastpitch Softball is accepting online registration for the 2022 season.

The league, which plays at Charlotte Prather Park and is more than 60 years old, is open to girls and women ages 5-25 from all areas of the Eastern Panhandle.

The goal of the league is for players “to learn fundamentals, teamwork and the love of the game of softball.”

Cost for tee-ball players (ages 5-7) is $ 55. The rest of the age groups cost $ 75. They include C League (8-10), B League (11-13), A League (14-18) and Senior League (18-25).
