San José State Enhances Sports Performance Team

SAN JOSE, Calif. – In an effort to improve the student-athlete experience at San José State, Director of Athletics Jeff Konya announced the promotions of Shannon MendezDr. Joe Puentes and Laura Alexander on Tuesday. Alexander advances to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Wellness and Leadership Development, while Mendez becomes full-time in strength and conditioning and serves as the department’s registered dietitian, and Dr. Joe will provide additional sport specific psychologist services to all 22 intercollegiate sports at SJSU.

“Mental Health and Nutrition are two key areas that we need to continue to focus on here at San José State for our student-athletes,” said Konya. “Laura has done a tremendous job leading this area for us and helping identify two quality professionals to provide additional services for our Spartans. We wanted to have the ability to provide these necessary services for our student-athletes so that their needs are met.”

In addition to these services, SJSU student-athletes have free counseling services from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) on campus, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 p.m

Laura Alexander MA, ATC

  • Enters her 12th year at SJSU, and her third season on the leadership team.
  • Joined the executive leadership team in summer 2022.
  • Leads student-athlete support services and Beyond Sparta program, SJSU’s Lifeskills Event program.
  • Served as the head athletic trainer for football over the last five seasons (2017-21).

Dr. Joe Puentes

  • A Licensed psychologist with expertise in Sport and Performance Psychology, owner of Performance Psychology Center in Santa Rosa, Calif., where he lives with his family.
  • Worked with the football team for the 2021 season on mental performance and sport specific psychological issues.
  • Worked with the highest level of athletes from All-Americans to national champions and Olympians.
  • Has been hired part-time to work with all student-athletes at SJSU on Sport and Performance Psychology in addition to his continued work with football.

Shannon Mendez RD, CSCS

  • A registered dietitian and NSCA certified strength and conditioning coach.
  • Worked as a volunteer registered dietitian since summer 2021, created and delivered performance nutrition education to all student-athletes, provided 1-on-1 nutrition counseling to student-athletes, and managed all nutrition centers in athletics facilities.
  • Hired on a full-time basis in May 2022 as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach and registered dietitian.
  • She is the primary strength and conditioning coach working with the Cheer/Dance teams and assisting with women’s basketball and track and field Throws events in addition to continuing to build the Sports Performance Nutrition Department to serve all student-athletes.
