Fortinet Championship 2022 picks, predictions, best bets, odds: Golf expert says avoid Corey Conners this week

There’s little time to rest for the PGA Tour’s grinders, and many of them will tee off Thursday in Napa, Calif. to begin the 2022-23 season at the 2022 Fortinet Championship. The fall portion of the season is a critical time to earn FedEx Cup points and for new PGA Tour members to prove they can compete at the highest level. Max Homa won the event last year at Silverado Resort and Spa, shooting 65 on Sunday to beat Maverick McNealy by one stroke. That victory kicked off his run to his first appearance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Among the new members teeing up Thursday are 34-year-old rookie Erik Barnes, Paul Haley II, who earned Tour status for the first time in 10 years, regular-season points leader Carl Yuan and combined points leader Justin Suh. Among the other notable names in the Fortinet Championship 2022 field are 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Corey Conners and 2019 Fortinet winner Cameron Champ.

The latest Fortinet Championship odds list Homa as a 10-1 favorite, and Matsuyama (16-1) and Conners (16-1) aren’t too far behind. Only three other golfers have shorter than 30-1 odds – McNealy (22-1), Cameron Davis (22-1) and Sahith Theegala (28-1) – in the Fortinet Championship 2022 field. Before locking in any 2022 Fortinet Championship picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Fortinet Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of his 2022 Fortinet Championship picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Fortinet Championship expert picks

In a huge surprise, McDonald is fading Conners despite his status as one of the favorites. The Canadian hasn’t played in Napa since 2019, when he finished 13th. His ball-striking ability seems like a perfect fit for the course, but it’s his performance the closer he gets to the flag that keeps him from contending consistently. The 30-year-old was second on tour in greens in regulation last season (71.9 percent). He was also fifth in strokes gained off the tee and 13th tee-to-green. But he only had four top-10 finishes (and five missed cuts) in 25 tournaments.

On the other hand, Homa displayed the all-around game to contend every week last season, and it all started here. He was second in the field in strokes gained tee-to-green and in the top 20 in greens in regulation and strokes gained putting at the 2021 Fortinet. He finished the season 24th tee-to-green and 27th putting, and that balance is what propelled him to a career year. He had five top-10 finishes and was in the top 25 in 15 of his 24 outings in 2021-22. He also won the Wells Fargo in May and ranked 23rd on tour in scoring average (69,972).
