Matt Mott Weekly Press Conference

Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matt Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped the previous week.

Opening Statement…

“Tough weekend for us this past weekend. Started out at Alabama, lost that match 4-1. We start the game well scoring a good goal. Mary Kate McGuire had a good goal and then gave up an uncharacteristic goal off a corner. A little bit of the flood gates opened. I think as I said to the team afterwards, we tried to change our shape a little bit and made some tactical adjustments that just didn’t work. I kind of took responsibility for that one. From a coaching standpoint we got it kind of wrong. Then came back yesterday afternoon, to play Texas A&M. We lost that match 2-1, a really heartbreaking loss honestly… We played well in the first half, I thought we did a lot of things we wanted to do but didn’t get a goal. It was certainly an even match at worst. Came out in the second half maybe didn’t play great to start the half. They got a goal; we fought back and got a penalty kick with about five minutes to go. At that point you think maybe we can go get the winner if nothing else we’re going to take a draw which would have been a good draw against a good Aggies team. Then they gave up a set piece goal with about three minutes to go which is very uncharacteristic of our team to give up that kind of goal that late. Disappointed in a loss but we got to shift gears now to one of the biggest games of the year if not our biggest game of the year against Mississippi State on Thursday night at 6 pm at home. They’ve got a good RPI and they’re ranked nationally… James is doing a great job down there, lots of respect for those guys. But they’re a physical, tough team that we got to be ready for a tough match. We get to play for a trophy, the Magnolia Cup as we call it in soccer. That’s been down there for the last couple of seasons so certainly motivated to kick off against Mississippi State, again 6 pm Thursday night. Hoping for a big crowd, Rebel Nation has been great for our team. Our crowds have been fantastic whether the game is on Sunday afternoon or Thursday night. We appreciate that and certainly need them one more time here against the Bulldogs.”

What’s not clicking during this three-game stretch…

“One Alabama is third in the country, they’re rolling. We went into a difficult environment there and again tried to change some tactics that just didn’t work. Tennessee, I thought we fought hard, again good team, they’re leading the East. We just didn’t create enough offense. Then yesterday was that, I thought we were good in spells but offensively just not creating enough. We get the goal to tie it up, the penalty kick. I thought we defended well and we need to create more goal scoring chances and we’re not. I don’t think we’re getting the ball in good spots; we’re panicking a little bit with the ball. We just got to be better with it. I think when you look at seasons they kind of yo-yo and we’re in that low spot right now and we got to dig ourselves back out.
