The Ames football team fell to Class 5A No. 2 Dowling Catholic by a 51-7 score Friday at Ames High.
Nevada, the No. 6 team in 3A, hammered Algona by 38-14 score, Ballard suffered a 42-19 loss at the hands of No. 8 North Polk and Gilbert was dealt a 38-14 loss by No. 2 Humboldt in 3A District 2 football competition. Roland-Story suffered a 41-7 loss to No. 3 West Marshall in 2A District 7 play and Colo-NESCO was overpowered by BGM, 82-38 in an 8-player District 4 outing.
In cross country Ballard’s Paityn Noe set a new state record for a girls 5-kilometer time and the Ames girls took third as a team at the Fort Dodge Invitational Oct. 6. Noe is the No. 1 runner in 3A and Ames is ranked eighth as a team in 4A.
The Ballard girls, ranked second in 3A, took ninth out of 24 teams at Fort Dodge. The Little Cyclone boys took eighth and Ballard 22nd in the boys race.
Gilbert won both races at the Eagle Grove Invitational Oct. 4 and the Nevada boys and girls both took second to powerful North Polk teams at the Comet Invitational in Alleman Oct. 3. The Roland-Story girls finished third and the boys seventh at South Hamilton Invitational in Jewell Oct. 6.
In volleyball action, the Nevada team ranked 10th in 3A swept both Greene County and Saydel in Heart of Iowa Conference play. Ames swept Mason City in Iowa Alliance Conference play and dropped two matches at the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Invite, Gilbert fell at home to Boone in four sets Oct. 4 and Ballard went 4-2 at the Indianola Invite Saturday.
Roland-Story swept South Hamilton and Prairie City-Monroe in HOIC play and went 2-1 at the HDC Invite. Colo-NESCO beat Collins-Maxwell in four sets.
In boys golf Ames ended its season by placing sixth at the 4A district meet held at the AH Blank Golf Course in Des Moines Oct. 3.

Lueth is the top receiver in 5A and he still managed to have a big game in the loss to Dowling.
Lueth caught 10 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown. He now has 57 catches for 955 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season.
Long made two big defensive plays early for the Ames football team in the loss to Dowling.
Long knocked away two passes in the end zone to prevent a Dowling touchdown. He also caught nine passes for 44 yards.
Stevenson was the top offensive weapon for the Nevada football team in its victory over Algona.
Stevenson carried the ball 24 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
Burlage was a huge force on defense for Nevada in the victory over Algona.
Burlage recorded 8.5 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack in the Cub win.
Hawthorne turned in a solid all-around game for Gilbert in the loss to Humboldt.
Hawthorne ran for 40 yards, caught five passes for 35 yards and made 8.5 tackles.
Hartsook had his best game of the season at quarterback for Ballard in the loss to North Polk.
Hartsook completed 16 of 28 passes for 233 yards and one touchdown against the Comets.

Flattebo had a strong game at receiver for Roland-Story in the loss to West Marshall.
Flattebo caught seven passes for 88 yards against the Trojans.
Clatt ran the ball well for Colo-NESCO in its 8-player District 4 loss to BGM Friday.
Clatt carried the ball 16 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns. He also made 7.5 tackles on defense.
Noe, the top-ranked runner in 3A, broke her own girls state record in the 5-kilometer run for Ballard at the Fort Dodge Invitational cross country meet.
Noe completed the course in 17 minutes, 9.8 seconds to break her own state mark of 17:23.60 set earlier this year.
Ames’ Turk came in sixth behind Noe and four ranked 4A runners in the girls race at the Fort Dodge Invitational.
Turk, ranked 15th in 4A, ran a 5k time of 18:13.6.

Wadsley gave Gilbert the individual boys champion at the Eagle Grove Invitational.
Wadsley won the boys race with a 5k time of 17:18.44. He beat Algona’s Ryan Stundahl by 28.36 seconds.
Stahr led a tight pack at the front for the Gilbert girls at Eagle Grove.
She ran a 5k time of 21:29.81 to place second individually behind the 21:15.18 run by Humboldt’s Brynn Malo.
Gibson was excellent at setter for the Nevada volleyball team in its victories over Greene County and Saydel.
Gibson tallied 34 assists, five digs and two aces in the victory over Greene County. In the win over Saydel she recorded 31 assists and nine digs.
Thompson had a great tournament for the Ballard volleyball team at Indianola Saturday.
The junior right-side hitter finished with 23 kills over six matches. She also recorded six blocks.

Lande had a huge match for the Roland-Story volleyball team during its victory over South Hamilton.
Lande recorded 20 kills on 35.7% efficiency. She also had 15 digs and two assists against the Hawks.
Lande added 17 kills and 11 digs at the HDC Invite and six kills and nine digs in the win over PCM.
