Clever girls golf claims program’s first district title

The Clever Blue Jays fired a tournament-low 437 to pick up this year’s Class 1 District 1 championship, on Monday, Oct. 10, at the Island Green Golf Course in Republic.

Maddie Kime, who carded a 49 on the front side and a 44 on the back, for a 93 led the Blue Jays. Also contributing to the Clever effort were Josette Mclaughlin 54-46-100, Avery Whitlinger 60-62-122, Sophia Fields 60-62-122 and Laurel Wilson 70-60-130.

“For our team to qualify for state feels great. We’ve all worked really hard this year and now we’re all going to get to compete at state,” said Blue Jay senior Josette McLaughlin. “Getting to experience playing in the state tournament is going to be so exciting and I can hardly wait to experience it.”

The victory marked the first time that Clever has ever won a district title in girls golf.

“Our team has been competing for somewhere around 11 years, so today’s district championship was really big for our program,” said Clever head coach Jeff Boyles. “These kids are special, so for me, it was really great to get to watch them walk off the 18th green as district champions.”

Second place went out to the Greenwood Blue Jays. The Jays, led by Katy Daugherty’s 111, posted a 451. Daugherty was joined by Eva Heidemann and Anna McQueary with 113’s, Anna Le with a 114 and Emma Sculley with a 145.

Greenwood, as this year’s District 1 tournament runner-up, also qualifies for state tournament play.

“We didn’t hit the ball today as well as we have been. Our squad consists of three sophomores and two freshmen, so I think they got a bit nervous during their first round,” said Greenwood head coach Jeff Tebbenkamp. “But they settled down and played much better on the back side.”

“I’m really excited for our girls though,” he said. “They overcame a tough start to place second and now they’re on their way to state. I’d say that’s a lot to be proud of. As for Greenwood girls golf, the future looks to be very bright.”

Maddie Kime, with her round of 93, wasn’t only a member of the Clever Blue Jay district champions, she was also this year’s individual champion.

“Honestly, I feel like I played really well today. I had a couple of pickups but I was able to bounce back from them to finish out the day well,” she said. “Being this year’s individual champion feels great but what makes me feel the best is knowing that the Blue Jays are on their way to state.”

Clever’s core in their drive for this year’s district title consisted of seniors Kime, McLaughlin and Avery Whitlinger.

“With the exception of Maddie, who moved into our district this year from Washington, I’ve gotten to watch Josette and Avery come so far. From freshmen to district champions as seniors, wow,” said coach Boyles. “But this year, with the addition of Maddie, they all meshed together really well. I’m so proud of them all.”

This year’s Class 1 state tournament will take place at the Country Club Golf Course of Missouri on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 17 & 18.

The top four players on both first and second place teams, plus the next top twelve scores qualified for state.
