Cardinals Host Zips, Travel to Bobcats

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 13, with a home contest against Akron, followed by a road matchup with Ohio on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Cardinals will play a Pink Game at home against Akron and fans and spectators are encouraged to wear pink.

Last Time Out

Ball State went 1-1 last week after the Cardinals dropped their first Mid-American Conference match of the season. BSU enters the week with an overall record of 5-4-4 and a 4-1-1 mark in MAC play. Avery Fenchel led the way with two goals in BSU’s 6-2 victory at Toledo. Delaney Caldwell, Lexi Fraley, Maria Broeringand Emily Roper each added a goal. Caldwell, Fraley, Jenna Dombrowskiand Lexy Smith each added an assist.

Season Leaders

The Cardinals are led by Fenchel with 10 goals, which is second in the MAC and tied for 12th in the NCAA. Caldwell is second on the team with five goals, while Fraley has three goals. Roper has two goals, while Dombrowski, Tori Monacoand Sammy Corcoran each have a goal. Abby Elgert paces the team with four assists. Smith is second on the team with three assists, while Fraley, Alex McPheeand Maya Millis each have two assists. The Cardinals have six other players with one assist. Bethany Moser has been a key cog to the defense as the BSU keeper. Moser has made 49 saves in 13 matches and has posted three shutouts and two combined shutouts.

Series Outlook with Akron

The Cardinals are 14-2-5 all time against the Zips and are 2-0 under the Head Coach Josh Rife. Ball State has won four of the last five meetings, including a 3-1 victory in Muncie last season. In the five-match stretch, the Cardinals and Zips have one draw. BSU is 9-0-2 in matches played in Muncie.

Scouting the Zips

Ella Hadley leads Akron with four goals. Emma King has a team-high two assists and is second on the squad with two assists. Caitlin Bruni, Laurie-Anne Renaud, Morgan Pentz, and Kristina Syragakis each have one goal. Penelope Cuirinier has spent the most time in goal for the Zips and has made four starts. Cuirinier has made 46 saves and has recorded one shutout.

Series Outlook with the Bobcats

Ohio leads the overall series with Ball State 11-8-5. The Cardinals are 1-0-1 under Coach Rife against the Bobcats. In the last four meetings, BSU won two matches, while the other two matches ended in a draw. Ball State is 2-9-2 on the road against Ohio.

Scouting Ohio

Regan Berg paces the Bobcats with five goals. Abby Townsend leads the team with eight assists and is second on the team with four goals. Aubrey Rea and Shae Robertson each have three goals on the season. OU has four others with two goals. Haley Miller is second on the team with three assists. Sam Wexell has been the keeper in the most recent matches and has appeared in eight matches with four starts. She has 27 saves on the season. Celeste Sloma has made 10 appearances with nine starts.
