  • ICC’s deadline for name replacements has ended
  • However, BCCI could still name a replacement with special dispensation from ICC by October 15.
  • BCCI Selectors will name Mohammad Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement soon.
  • Mohammad Shami has cleared his fitness test at the NCA.
  • Deepak Chahar is still down with a stiff back and is unlikely to be fit by October 15.
  • Hence, he is likely to be ruled out. Mohammed Siraj will come into the reserves.
  • Both Shami, Chahar and other standbys will travel to Australia on October 12th.

Shami, Siraj along with Ravi Bishnoi and Shreyas Iyer will take the flight to Australia on October 13 and will link up with the squad in Brisbane. India will play Western Australia on October 13 in Perth but will move to Brisbane on October 14. The Gabba will be India’s base where they play Australia and New Zealand in warm-up games before the T20 World Cup.

“Shami is fit and fine to go. He had a few good sessions. What he lacks is match practice and we have to bank on the two warm-up games to get him at 100%. It’s a big challenge but he is an experienced bowler and knows what is needed. Deepak is still not fit. So, we can’t take a call on his inclusion yet. The physios will decide in a day or two,” a member of the selection committee told InsideSport.

Shami was brought into the Indian team after the bowlers’ poor show in the Asia Cup. The experienced pacer was picked for the T20 World Cup team as well. But unfortunately, Shami contracted Covid-19, ruling him out of the India vs Australia series. Despite being tested negative, he has not been able to come back into the manifold.

It is given that the player normally takes time before attaining peak fitness after Covid. It is a growing concern now. It is not only about his fitness though, Shami has not featured in the shorter format for India since November 2021. Add the fitness angle and his lack of international matches is a major concern.

It is at this juncture that the fitness test is going to play an important role. There is no doubt about the talent and the skillset in both the players, but now it is more than their ability to bowl. It is about sustaining their fitness for a longer period and being on top of their game as well.

What are the ICC Guidelines & Deadline on REPLACEMENT?

As per the ICC GUIDELINES, participating teams had a chance to make changes in their squad until October 9 even if their players are not suffering from any injury concerns. After the deadline, they would have to seek ICC’s permission to make any changes. The same will have to be approved by a committee.

Deepak Chahar FITNESS TEST: It is important to mention that Chahar, who is one of the standbys for the World Cup, is the latest entrant at NCA. He suffered a back injury before the India vs South ODI series. That has jeopardized his chance of being Bumrah’s replacement.

“Deepak is not in a position for fitness test. He is at the NCA and will undergo monitoring. He has been advised rest. Shami is recovering well and should be fit for the World Cup. Replacement will be announced soon for Jasprit,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport earlier.

With him down with back problems again, it is Mohammed Siraj who is tipped to find a place in the reserves alongside Bishnoi and Iyer.

What FIT Shami and FIT Chahar bring to bowling unit

MOHAMMAD SHAMI

  • Brings in his experience
  • Known for his wicket-taking ability
  • Has that skiddy factor which can be an asset in Australia
  • Can prove to dangerous bowler with the new ball

DEEPAK CHAHAR

  • If there is anything in the pitch, he makes full use of it
  • He can bowl at the death as well as with the new ball
  • Is a decent lower-order batter, can contribute important runs at the end

Although head coach Rahul Dravid might be in Australia currently, he is a concerned man with regards to Bumrah’s replacement. It has assumed even more significance with the Indian bowlers lacking firepower in the bowling department sans Bumrah.

Even the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel have not been at their impressive best. Their bowling at the death has been even more problematic. Such has been their form of late that India are pinning their hopes on youngster Arshdeep Singh.
