T20 World Cup: Australia still alive but walking a fine line after England blockbuster washed out

Rain has ruined Australia’s blockbuster contest with England at the MCG, leaving the defending champions with a fine line to walk if they are to pull themselves out of the T20 World Cup group stage.

The no result leaves Australia sitting on three points after a humiliating defeat to New Zealand in their opening clash and a less-than-convincing Marcus Stoinis-inspired win over Sri Lanka in Perth.

It also means they have just two more games to recover the net run rate they lost against New Zealand and get enough points to secure safety.

Australian captain Aaron Finch admitted his disappointment at the match being called off, with the hosts having had the opportunity to pretty much end England’s hopes, but said safety had to be paramount.
