NFL: Christian McCaffrey walks out in San Francisco 49ers gear after Carolina Panthers trade

‘Fired up’ Christian McCaffrey walks out in San Francisco 49ers gear for the first time after the All-Pro running back’s surprise trade from the Carolina Panthers

Christian McCaffery took the practice field for the first time for the San Francisco 49ers on Friday afternoon following his massive trade from the Carolina Panthers the night before.

The 26-year-old running back was traded for a package that includes second, third, and fourth-round picks in the 2023 draft from the Niners, as well as a fifth rounder in 2024.

McCaffery shared his excitement at linking up with the team in a clip posted on their official Twitter account, he said: ‘What’s up Niner faithful? Christian McCaffrey here, just touched down and I can’t tell you how excited I am. Fired up, can’t wait to get to work.’

He was later seen walking out in a 49ers uniform for the first time, wearing the No. 23 jersey.

McCaffrey is under contract until the summer of 2026, however he has an opt-out clause in his contract that could see him enter free agency after this season. Assuming he chooses to remain with the 49ers his salary and cap number will jump from $690,000 to $11.8 million in base salary with a cap number of $12m.

Reports stated that the Panthers were in serious discussions with the Rams as well, but they ultimately chose to go with San Francisco’s offer. And despite speculation to the contrary, the Bills were not in consideration, according to reports.

Neither the 49ers nor the Rams had a first-round pick that they were able to include in negotiations due to trading them for quarterbacks Trey Lance and Matthew Stafford respectively.

According to the NFL Draft Pick Value chart, which was created by legendary coach Jimmy Johnson, the value of the picks included in the deal by San Francisco are the equivalent to that of a first-round pick.

The move also clearly signals that the Panthers are entering a full rebuild after recently parting ways with former head coach Matt Rhule.

The rebuild could also potentially see several other talented young players including linebacker Shaq Thompson and wide receiver DJ Moore as the targets of further trade speculation before the November 1 trade deadline.

The 49ers on the other hand have essentially pushed all of their chips to the center of the table by adding one of the NFL’s best talents to an offense that already includes dangerous weapons such as Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

The move also gives Lance one of, if not, the most talented supporting cast in the league when he eventually returns from his ankle injury.
